Collaboratory 3:30 - 4:30 PM Lt. Col. James E. Roberts is an academic year 2021 Student at the Air War College of the Air University located at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. The Air War College educates senior military and civilian teammates to serve as critical and strategic thinkers able to serve as national security senior leaders. |
Lt. Col. Roberts is a former student of Coach Brad Smith. After high school, he pursued an education at the U.S. Air Force Academy, graduating in 2002. He is a career space operations officer with experience in intercontinental ballistic missile nuclear deterrent operations, Milstar satellite command and control operations, ground-based missile warning, missile defense, space surveillance operations, Headquarters Air Force staff, and joint force space component staff. Prior to his current position, Lt. Col. Roberts was the Commander, 6th Space Warning Squadron, Cape Cod Air Force Station, Mass.
Lt. Colonel Roberts sent this letter of encouragement after the event:
April 2, 2021
Eagle STEM Team,
First of all, thank you for your time and thoughtful questions yesterday. It is evident there are some deep thinkers in your midst.
As you may have surmised from our conversation, the questions you raised to me yesterday are the same dilemmas facing leaders in the space industry, our national leadership, and our partners around the globe. There is an on-going dialogue amongst and between these various parties as we work to establish norms of behavior (i.e. what is acceptable behavior and what is not) in our spacefaring activities. Every technical innovation or breakthrough brings with it a new set of hurdles to navigate. Our nation needs critical thinkers and problem solvers like you to continue working these tough issues into the future. I am inspired by your keen intellect, and I implore you to dedicate yourselves diligently to the pursuit of your educational
excellence. You never know where you will go in life, but each of you possesses a unique talent. Provided you continue to invest in yourself by deliberately developing your skills, you can be confident you will be ready to tackle the hard problems ahead when the opportunity is
presented.
Finally, best of luck to you all as you defend your state title. You have a most impressive team!
Sincerely,
James Roberts
P.S. Feel free to reach out to me anytime through Mr. Smith.

Lt. Colonel Roberts answers your ongoing questions:
DOES THE EPA HAVE JURISDICTION IN SPACE?
The short answer regarding the question posed about the EPA and regulating outer space activities is “no, I can’t find any evidence that they do.” I searched the EPA policy pages with negative results. What I did come across was references to current attempts to adapt NASA processes and technologies to Earth-bound use (consider water reclamation as an example). So while the EPA does not apparently regulate any activity beyond the atmosphere, they are interested in leveraging technologies designed for the space/lunar/etc. environments to improve our activities on Earth. How cool is that?! wHAT? A REAL WARP DRIVE?
In reference to my discussion, here is one of the news articles about warp drive and how it might be possible to actually build one in the future without breaking the laws of physics. https://phys.org/news/2021-03-potential-real-physical-warp.html question #3
